FREAKFEST 2015 = Lots of King Pizza Bands, friends and… Pizza
When Greg Hanson and his band The Mad Doctors wanted to release an album, they ran into the unfortunate reality that there are usually a lot more barriers than anticipated. Instead of taking that fact for granted, Greg decided to launch his own label and to use it as a platform for other bands. Though King Pizza is less local-scene-centrist than some of its DIY predecessors–the Brooklyn label’s roster includes bands from Providence, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Boston, Philadelphia, etc–it delivers on the community vibe.
While the label doesn’t associate itself with a hyphenated amalgamation of genres, it leans heavily towards loud guitars and things that can be generally classified as “[insert descriptor] rock.” So far, the King Pizza team–including Stefan Mersch, Bettina Warshaw, Alex Beciana, Tyler Bower & Alex Knoche–has released one record on vinyl and over 20 cassettes (with digital download codes).
So, what does one do with a bunch of good bands? Throw a show! Too many bands? Start the show at 2pm. FREAKFEST 2015 was a day-long spectacle at IDIO Gallery, featuring King Pizza bands, like-minded friends and much beer. Check out the photos by Seth Applebaum below.
